• August Blog

    Dear Members,

It is with great sadness that I have to report the death (on Saturday 30th July) of Bill Tyzack, Bill had been a member of Stanedge for over 30 years, he was a past Captain of the Club and he was the Hon Secretary of Stanedge for many years until ill health forced him to hand over the secretarial reigns - quite simply Bill was Mr Stanedge!

Although Bill had been ill for a number of years, he maintained his membership and always kept a keen eye on events at the club. To try and help raise the club’s profile he regularly submitted a report containing our competition results to the Derbyshire Times. Bill will be sadly missed our thoughts go to his wife Barbara and his family.

    Fusarium

I am sure the majority of you will have noticed that some of the greens currently have a ‘Fusarium’ type of fungal disease on them, which means they look a bit patchy and appear to be not quite up to our usually high standard, this is not an uncommon problem and one which is being treated by our ground staff with the use of chemicals which will hopefully clear the disease quickly. So, please take care, ensure you wash your hands after your game, and (sorry, I’ve got to get the pun in somewhere…) please don’t lick your balls! Hopefully, the greens will be back in ‘tip-top’ condition very soon.

    The Month Ahead

July has been and gone and we’re rapidly moving in to August which will be another busy month with three more ‘Open’ competitions: (Junior/Adult, Gents & Mixed), the Captain’s Breakfast, the Captain’s Away Day & Members Weekend just some of the competitions that are on the agenda. Please support the club by making every effort to take part in as many of the club competitions as you can.

Whilst the ‘Open’ competitions by their very nature, are ‘Open’ to members from other clubs, they are also ‘Open’ to Stanedge club members, so please don’t think that you are excluded from playing on these days. If you want to play in one or more of these ‘Opens’ and meet the playing criteria, please contact our Hon. Secretary Chris Shaw to book a tee time.

    Members Weekend

Our Members Weekend, whilst still a ‘proper’ golf competition, is a little more ‘light-hearted’ than most, as it offers you the chance to play golf in a fancy dress costume. So, why not enter into the spirit of the weekend, dig out some of your more outrageous garments or costumes and lets see if we can’t do better than last year, when we had Fred Flintstone, Elvis, Andy Pandy, Looby Loo, a Belly Dancer and many more, as members happily thrashed their way round the golf course. Surprisingly, the scores of those playing in fancy dress stood up remarkably well to those who chose to play in more traditional golfing attire.

    Race Night

On the Saturday evening of Members Weekend (20th August) our Captain Jim Carter is holding a ‘Race Night’ in the Clubhouse – if you’re interested in having a fun evening and a ‘little flutter’ please read the notice that has been displayed in the clubhouse to the left of the bar and put your names down. I should add that this event is not just limited to club members, so if you’ve got family and/or friends who you think might be interested, by all means bring them along!

    And Finally…

Although strictly a non-golfing related matter, I thought I’d make reference to it here, just in case there’s one or two of you out there who still don’t know - we have a ‘Pop Master’ in our midst! Our esteemed Assistant Secretary, Jon Roberts recently appeared on Radio 2 in the Ken Bruce Show’s ‘Pop Master’ quiz. Not only did Jon beat his opponent on the day by amassing 18 points, he then demonstrated his quick-fire recall skills to name the ‘3 in 10’ and win a digital radio – although he might not want to admit to it, you never know when a bit of knowledge about ‘Shakin’ Stevens’ will come in handy. Well done Jon!

That’s all for now, more in a month or so!
