• September Blog

    Dear Members,

    Course News

On Tuesday 9th August a thorough inspection of the course was carried out by the Derbyshire Union of Golf Clubs (DUGC) to determine whether our Standard Scratch (SS) currently 68 against a Par of 69, was correct. We were subsequently notified that in fact the SS for the course should be 69 (the same as the par for the course).

Because of the costs involved, our scorecards will not be re-printed to reflect this change until current stocks have been used, but the SS change from 68 to 69 will be reflected on all competition scores posted to Master Scorecard.

The more observant of you will have noticed the recent appearance of some new signs around the course, initially around the pond, on the edge of the quarry & in the car park. More new signs will be erected in the coming weeks. Thanks to the Greens committee and helpers for progressing this work.

On Monday 12th September the greens are being ‘hollow tined’ – a necessary task to ensure the continued quality of our greens. A ‘working party’ of volunteers will be on the course from 7.30am to pick up the debris from this work. If you are able to help, please add you name to the list of volunteers located to the left of the bar in the club house and/or speak to Norman Shaw.

    A Fond Farewell

Bill Tyzack’s funeral took place on Monday 8th August and not surprisingly there was a massive turnout of about 150 who gathered to give their last respects to ‘Mr Stanedge’.

On a slightly lighter note, which summed Bill up perfectly, one of his sons said, that wherever Bill was in 6 months time, you could bet he’d be the secretary or chairman!

    Club News

On the Saturday evening of Members Weekend, our Captain Jim Carter held a ‘Race Night’ in the club house, which was expertly ‘run’ by Carl Hayes. This proved to be a very popular event and a good time was had by all. Overall almost £700 was raised on the night and Jim has decided to donate £500 of this to his chosen charity ‘Ashgate Croft Special School’ with the remainder going into club funds – Thank you Jim!

The date and venue for this year’s Annual Club Dinner & Presentation Evening will be decided in the coming days/weeks. So please watch out for notices appearing about this in the club house and support your club by attending the evening, even if you haven’t got a prize to collect, come along & have a good night out.

    August Competition Results

I’m sure you’re all well aware that August is the busiest month for club competitions, the fun started on the 4th with the first ever ‘Stanedge Adult/Junior Open’. The competition which was open to any adult and junior pairing and played in a Greensome Medal format was well received by all competitors. Paul and Tom Mooney (Matlock) won with a magnificent nett 63; Nick & Matthew Szczomak (Mickleover) came 2nd with a nett 66.5 and Pete & Harry Shield (Matlock) 3rd with a nett 67 (OB9). Will Newton (Stanedge Jnr) won ‘Nearest the pin’ (4th); Daniel Oliver (Newark Jnr) won ‘Nearest the pin’ (10th); Gianni Risorto (Chesterfield Jnr) won the ‘Longest drive’ (18th).

The ‘Gents Open’ on the 6th was won by Les Bacon (Stanedge) & son Shaun (Matlock) with 43pts, Shaun also won the longest drive on the 3rd hole, whilst Jim Peters (Stanedge) had the rare honour of winning both nearest the pin prizes.

The ‘Taylor Cup’, a mixed foursome’s medal competition was won by Bev & John Taylor with a nett 70.5. Dave Ryan & Mary Dronfield with a nett 71 came a close 2nd.

There was a healthy turn out for the ‘Past Captain’s Cups’, with 13 Past Gents Captain’s & 9 Past Ladies Captain’s taking part, in addition 3 Past Captain’s who were unable to play supported the event and enjoyed a meal in the club house with the competitors. Invited present Captain Jim Carter won the Gents Cup with 38 pts, relieving 2nd placed Mike Ashworth of the cup he’d held for the past 2 years & our immediate past Ladies Captain Denise Guard won the Ladies Bowl with 31 pts.

The ‘Captain’s Breakfast’ was very popular as usual, with the entry list being full many weeks in advance. Despite the 6am start time, the 35 competitors (yes we had one no show) played a medal format & full handicap stableford, both individually and as part of a 4 man team) & had a great time. As usual the event was rounded off in grand style with a well earned Full English Breakfast, lovingly prepared by Margaret who was ably assisted by husband Graham!

Those taking the spoils on the day were:

Best Gross: (73) shared by Dom Claxton & James Gill

    Best Individual: (40pts) Pete Yeomans; 2nd Individual: (39pts OB9) Andy Hesketh;

3rd Individual: (39pts) Phil Rastrick. Best Team: (111pts) with 3 of 4 scores counting: Phil Rastrick, Ken Fergusson, Mark Jones & Sam Griffiths.

The ‘Tyzack Trophy’ had even more meaning this year, given Bill’s recent death. This year’s winners with a huge score of 48 pts were: Gary Clarke & Chris Gordon, with Mark & Julie Griffiths (46pts OB9), just pipping their son Sam & Di Davis (46pts) for 2nd place.

The ‘August Mid-week Medal’ saw Carl Hayes win Division 1 with a nett 64; Sam O’Donnell win Division 2 also with a nett 64 & Alan Hinchcliffe win Division 3 with a nett 67.

The ‘Captain’s Away Day’ was held at Sickleholme Golf Club, and was extremely well supported with over 30 members taking part. The morning 11 hole am/am was won by Mark Griffiths, Norman Shaw, Robin Green and Jim Gill. The afternoon 4BBB stableford off ¾ handicap was won by Paul Robinson & Doug Cousin - with a massive 47pts! Pete Yeomans won the ‘nearest the pin’ prize.

On ‘Members Weekend’, unfortunately only a couple of brave souls played in fancy dress this year, well done ‘Batman’ (Mark Beresford) & the ‘Judo player’ (Phil Bradley).

    The winning Ladies were:

    Jane Hardy – Div 1 (nett 77) Julie Griffiths – Div 2 (nett 71)

Joan Green – best front 9 (nett 36.5) Julie Lowe – best back 9 (nett 39)

Chris Hurley – nearest the pin (4th) Leslie Mann – Par 3 comp (nett -2)

Ruth Rastrick won the Junior section with a nett 74.

    And the winning Gents were:

    Phil Armstrong – Div 1 (nett 68 OB9) Sam Ryder – Div 2 (nett 64)

Cliff Bradbury – Div 3 (nett 65) Arnold Vardy – Par 3 comp (nett -3)

Pat Cliffe – best front 9 (nett 32.5) Mark Griffiths – best back 9 (nett 33.5)

Geoff Slater – nearest the pin (10th) – the 8th hole-in-one of the year at Stanedge!

Stanedge’s final ‘Open’ of the year ‘The Mixed Open’ was played in typically un-Stanedge-like weather (warm, no wind, blue skies) the first prize was taken by husband & wife (& Stanedge members) Mark & Julie Griffiths with a better ball score of 40 pts.

Gents Medal No 7 ‘The John Hague Memorial Trophy’ saw John Pointon (Jnr) win Div 1 (nett 65); Jim Carter win Div 2 (nett 66) & Don Redihough win Div 3 (nett 67).

Finally, the month was brought to a close with our annual Bank Holiday 9 hole ‘Do’s & Don’ts’ fun competition, where a golfer is partnered by a non-golfer who does all of the putting. The winners were: Phil Rastrick partnered by his wife Rachel (nett 38.5). Pete Elliott (& wife Elaine) came 2nd (nett 39.5), just pipping their son Joe Elliott (& girlfriend Libby) who also had a nett 39.5.

So, it’s on to September, more from me in the coming weeks!
