Captain Jim Carter hosted his Captain’s Weekend which was very well supported and played in varying weather conditions Saturday’s weather was ‘changeable’ whilst Sunday turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year to date. In addition to the usual array of prizes on offer, Jim ran a Two's club (9 two’s were achieved) and had two spirit bottles, one full of ‘1’ pence pieces and the other full of ‘5’ pence pieces. Members were asked to guess the amount in each bottle with the proceeds going to Jim’s chosen charity. For the record, there was £17.47 in ‘1’ pence pieces spirit bottle (Linda Wiseman guessed £17.50) and there was £53.00 in ‘5’ pence pieces spirit bottle (The Chairman guessed £53.15).
On a lighter note, one of our esteemed members, who I’m not going to name, but he’s a ‘bean counter’ (accountant) by profession and his initials are DC, guessed there would be £57.44p in the 5 pence spirit bottle! – I think it’s fair to say he wasn’t that bothered about winning, it was more the taking part that mattered to him – That’s the spirit! Thanks and well done to all who entered!
The weekend was well supported with over 140 members taking part including six Junior members and one young man in particular, 11 year old Charlie Eades had a day to remember. Playing off a handicap of 40 Charlie amassed 48 stableford points on the day. His score was helped greatly by the way he played the extremely tough par four 5th and par four 14th, the two hardest holes on the course. Charlie was delighted to par the 5th hole, which with his handicap allowance gave him 5 stableford points, and I think it’s fair to say he was ecstatic when he chipped in to score a birdie 3 on the 14th hole to give him a further 6 stableford points. Speaking from experience, The Chairman knows how hard it is to birdie these holes – he’s only managed one birdie on them since they were created. It just goes to show that physical strength counts for nothing, if you’ve got timing, rhythm and a little bit of luck, just about anything is possible. Well done Charlie!
Another exceptional score (46 pts) was recorded by relatively new member Derek Morley to comfortably claim the top prize in Gents Division 3.
I’m sure that both Derek and young Charlie will find that they are playing off a considerably lower handicap next time the play golf.
